Outlook Can't Authenticate with Exchange via VPN

Post by usenet » Mon Jun 22, 2009 5:33 am

I am currently running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and have all Windows and Office
updates applied. I am using NCP Secure Entry Client for my VPN client and
can successfully see network drives and so on. I can also ping my Exchange
Server by using the IP address.

I tried running the setup for Outlook and it automatically found my username
and e-mail address. However, Outlook stops and asks for my username and
password. No matter what credentials I use, including the Administrator
credentials, it does not authenticate my machine.

I have spent the past few hours trying to find an answer to the problem but
haven't had much luck. Any help is appreciated!

Ehlo burowyako,

I am probably asking the wrong question, but are we sure the certificate
on the Exchange suits Vista? I know that on Exchange 2003, you have to install
a particular certificate update for Vista to be able to connect.

Also, if the details you provide are only username and password, try: \
and then password.

I haven't had an issue with other Vista machines. I'm 100% positive that if
I took this machine to my office and connected it on the LAN I could see the
Exchange Server perfectly.

I have tried the \ with every credential possible and that
didn't work either.

For what it's worth, we're running Exchange 2007 SP2.

Ehlo burowyako,
Another thing I've noticed at certain organizations, is that you should log
in with \. As in - MYEXCNG\administrator.

That advice is misguided. The proper form is DOMAIN\SAMAccountName or
DOMAIN\SAMAccountName\Alias if Alias is different from SAMAccountName, and
for some clients you need to use forward slashes instead of backslashes. Or
you can, in many cases, use the User Principal Name.

Ehlo Ed Crowley [MVP],
Right, well, as misguided as it is, I've seen at least two customers where
you have to logon into Exchange this way.

I have tried everything that was suggested and still haven't had any luck.
Any other thoughts? I have read in some forms about checking which DNS I'm
pointed to. I don't know how to do this but thought I would throw the idea
out there.

I don't understand why it isn't validating my machine. I really want to get
this working! Any help is appreciated.
